April Wine Club Selections

We're back with our second edition of The Rose WIne Club. This time we have exciting selections from Portugal and Slovenia as well two beautiful wines from California.

Leading off the International selection we have the 2012 dry Furmint from Verus Winery in Slovenia. Furmint (Šipon) is a native Hungarian grape and is the primary grape used in Tokaji dessert wines. This version from Verus WInery is vinified dry using organic grape growing techniques. It is apple must, peach and quince on the nose with a smooth mineral mouthfeel balanced by subtle acidity. Pair with peppery chicken and lemon.

From Portugal, we are featuring a 60% Baga and 40% Touriga Nacional from Quinta das Bágeiras in the Bairrada DOC. Baga is the principal grape of Bairrada: producing tanic, bell peppery wines with decent acidity. Touriga Nacional is more traditionally used as one of the primary grapes in the port producing region of Duoro. Touriga produces wines with concentrated black fruit and high tannins. The 2010 Vinho Tinto from winemaker Mario Sergio is open-fermented in cement tanks without destemming and aged in old wood vats. It is bottled without fining or filtration. 2015 is the year to drink this wine and the acidity from the Baga makes it very food friendly so try it with anything from spring mushrooms and pasta to game and charcuterie: it will kindly help you digest :)

On the domestic front we start with an offering from Robert Sinskey Vineyards in Los Carneros. The wine is called "Abraxas" (The god of 365 Heavens) and contains 35% Riesling, 33% Pinot Blanc, 18% Pinot Gris and 14% Gewurztraminer (all of which are 100% organic). This naturally fermented wine is beautifully floral and crisp. Pair it with a spicy thai curry and a movie viewing of something from the brat pack: you won't be upset about it.

Our last wine is another piece of art featuring organic grapes, this time from the Sierra Foothills. Welcome to the fullest bodied red we've featured in this club. This wine is full of California fruit, silky on the tongue and stands on it's own: no cheese necessary. Chocolate, Vanilla, supple tanins and a tiny spike of acidity to make things lively. Pop an old album on the record player and enjoy the Chacewater 2012 ZInfandel with friends after work: it's just what you needed.
